She refused to call an Assembly this time, instead closeting herself with a few key Lords in her offices. This time with Malvin in full view. He leaned on the side of her desk, arms crossed, all broody silence and arrogant disdain. It was a unique situation, the head of a foreign state facing off against the Casakraine nobles- without any standing other than that of unofficial mate and father of the Queen’s unborn child. Izobelle watched them watching him- and almost sympathized. They couldn’t treat him like a consort, and he was demonstrably more than a temporary lover. As Clan Chief, and her mate, he also would have an unofficial hand in Casakraine politics.

“This isn’t going to work,” Fiora said. “He needs to have official status, and his influence over you- and Casakraine- needs to be contractually quantified.”

“That sounds like a marriage proposal,” Malvin said, the flash of an insouciant grin on his face. “I keep askin’ her, and she keeps sayin’ no.”

“Majesty,” Lord Wadim said, expression pained. “May I make a suggestion?”

Izobelle shrugged. “Suggestions are legal.”

“The concern, as was mentioned, is that normally when there is an... influencer... over a reigning monarch, said influencer’s role and responsibilities have been contractually defined.” Lord Wadim paused, then rose, bowing to Malvin, who inclined his head in turn. “I have heard nothing but praise for Clan Chief Dacus' governance over his people. But where does Malvin Dacus, private foreign citizen and father of the Queen’s child begin, and Lord Malvin Dacus, Clan Chief of Talogroth, begin? That is what needs to be determined. And until it is, I am making a firm suggestion that the Clan Chief remove himself from court and return to his own country, and the rule thereof.”

Silence descended. Izobelle regarded her late father’s contemporary. He'd said what no one else had quite had the courage to say- give Malvin the boot. She felt her mate's amusement- until she spoke.

“I agree. Malvin will go.”

Shock rippled through their bond, followed by cold- though nothing showed on his face. After a brief moment he straightened, turned, and bowed.

“As you wish, darlin'.”

She met his eyes, saying nothing. Foolish cub. How little he trusted her. He left the room without another word.

Izobelle rose. “I think that will be all for today. If you will excuse me?”
